The CVMA, along with other state veterinary medical associations,  is assisting the CDC and Auburn University in publicizing a study they are conducting on “Stress and Health Among Veterinarians”. The study includes  psychological distress and the increased risk of suicide among veterinarians. The study takes about 10 minutes to complete and is voluntary and anonymous.  More information.
 
H.R. 1528, the Veterinary Medicine Mobility Act was passed by Congress on July 16 and will go to the President next.  to As soon as the president signs the bill into law, veterinarians will be able to legally transport and dispense controlled substances in the field and across state lines.
 
Tramadol
Effective August 18, the DEA has scheduled tramadol as a Schedule IV controlled substance. Dr. Lynne White-Shim posted a blog recently explaining the decision and its implications.

Controlled Substance Permit Survey
The California Veterinary Medical Board is conducting a short premise survey to address a new law (Business and Professions Code Sections 4836.1) that will require the VMB to issue a veterinary assistant controlled substance permit to any person designated by a supervising veterinarian as obtaining or administering a controlled substance. Please take a few minutes of your time to complete the survey and help provide this important data.  
 
H.R. 4023 – Fairness to Pet Owners Act
This would impose new stipulations on veterinary prescriptions. 
 
The CVMA recently commissoned a study and report on economic trends affecting California Veterinarians. The survey data give a detailed picture of the demographic makeup of the population of veterinarians in California, economic conditions of the industry, and veterinarians’ attitudes toward the profession and its future. The survey findings cover a range of topics including work hours, job satisfaction, hiring, student debt, practice ownership and pay and benefits.
